Yeah… This outrage seems really bogus. I also think it’s kind of counter-productive to start policing the appropriation of popular* symbols. Remix culture (or whatever you want to call it) necessarily depends on the polysemy of signs, and to start suggesting that only certain people or institutions can engage in appropriation only functions to limit the future horizons of possibility.
*I want to use the term popular symbols as distinct from cultural symbols. Disney appropriating an image from the cover of a rock and roll album is different than the kind of appropriation that gives us the Chicago Blackhawks logo.
